One very “touchy” story lately come out from China and immediately “moved” the heart of the world. This story is a story about a young man and a woman which is older than him. They ran out from the city and family and decided to live together forever in a wild jungle. They love and care each other in peace for about 50 years (half century).

An old Chinese man aged 70 years, done carved 6000 stairs with his own hand (hand carved) for his wife which was 80 years old who has died inside a cave which she lived there for the last 50 years. 50 years ago, Liu Guo Jiang, a young 19 years old man, fall in love with a widow 29 years old woman named Xu Chao Qin …

Like in the story of Romeo and Juliet,
written by William Shakespeare, their friends criticize their relationship because of the age distance between them and also to the fact that Xu Chao Qin already has some children…

At that time, the young man Liu Guo Jiang cannot accept that criticize and he considered that as “not high moral standards” if a young man loving a woman which is far older than him. To avoid those kind of cheap gossips and humiliation from their society and environment, this couple decided to ran away, flee away, and live in a cave of Jiang Jin Village, South of Chong Qing.

In the beginning, their life was so sad because they have nothing, they didn’t have electricity and even food. They have to eat grass and roots which they found in that mountain. And Liu made a “rock oil lamp” to lighten their life.

Xu always felt that she already “tied the rope to Liu” and she always asking, “Did you regret about us?”. Liu always answered, “Whenever we diligent, this life will always be better.”

After 2 years they lived at that mountain, Liu started to carving stairs so that his wife can easily go down of the mountain easily. And this progress was go on for 50 years.

50 years later, in 2001, a group of adventurers did an exploration to that jungle. They were wondering that they found an old couple and also the 6000 hand carved stairs which made by Liu.

One of their 7 children, Liu Ming Sheng said: “My parents very loved each other, they lived alone for more than 50 years and never been separated even a single day. For that long time, My father have done 6000 stairs to impress my Mother, even though my Mother not so many time go down the mountain.”

This couple lived in peace for more than 50 years. One day, Liu already 72 years old, suddenly faint when in a way back home from their field. Xu was sit down and praying together with her husband and eventually Liu died in her hug. Because he very loved his wife, it was very very hard to release Liu hands because he was holding his wife very tightly.

“You already promised to take care of me and will always be with me until I die, now you precede and gone, how do I live without you?”. For some days, Xu again and again repeating this sentence while touching her husband coffin and with tears wetting all around her face.
In 2006, this story became one of the 10 famous China Love Story, which has been collected by Chinese Women Weekly Magazine. Government has been decided to preserve that “love stairs”, and their place to live becomes a museum so that this love story can be alive forever.

“the couple decided to elope and lived in a cave
in Jiangjin County in Southern ChongQing Municipality.”
The story didn’t tell at all if Xu abandoned her first batch of children, or took the children with her when she lived with Liu in the mountains.
How come this story had never been told in news giants like CNN, CBS news, etc.? I assume it is a true story coz this story was all over the internet, and nobody yet had scorned that this story was a sham.
Hi David,
I happened to catch the documentary on tv abt the awesome couple. Yes, they brought along all her 4 children from her 1st marriage up to the mountains. They had another 4 children together. He was actually fixing those stairs more for the children as they were all growing up & were travelling down the mountain often to attend school, & later to work. He painstakingly removed moss from the carved grits on the stairs every few months so that the stairs didnt get too slippery & therefore become dangerous for the children to climb.
Yeah, I was tearing uncontrollably while watching the documentary. Truely, one of the greatest love stories.
Could tell from the interview that they’re such wonderfully positive souls, never ever quarrelled. She said ‘when 2
people are living together, you just got to be harmonious.’
I might just visit those stairs & the mountain some day…
A.
